I am relatively new to the Daily 5 component in the reading classroom. I heard other teachers talking about it and knew that a number of schools were using it, so I felt compelled to buy the book and read it for myself. I am a new Reading Specialist at a primary school and I was looking for something that our reading teachers could use to improve the engagement and motivation of our students for reading. I purchased the book along with the sister book, The CAFE Menu. Therefore, I recommend that if you don't have that book that you purchase it too.The only reason I didn't give the book a 5 star rating was because I felt the first two chapters were confusing. For someone who had never read the first edition, I felt the writers should not have assumed the reader had done so. The authors kept referring to the information in the first book to compare what was new in the 2nd edition. I only reason I stuck with the book was because I heard great reviews from other teachers. But once I got to the third chapter, I started to understand the philosophy behind The Daily 5.The book is very helpful in explaining to teachers how to implement the 5 activities in the reading class. It explicitly gives step-by-step instructions on how to implement each activity (even what to say to the class), and how to practice the procedures before teaching any strategies. This part I thought was very helpful because if the groundwork is not set with the procedures, the Daily 5 will not be effective. We are using the activities, along with the strategies in The CAFE Menu for the first time in our school for the new school year. I am excited to see the improvement in the engagement and reading levels of our students.LS 18 yr teacher here! If your goal is to foster independence in your classroom, provide your students with meaningful ELA instead of busy work and provide your students with more choice in their learning then the D5 is for you. First year using this model with last year's 2nd graders and I can't do it again. The "Read to Self" (aka Quiet Reading, SSR, etc.) model alone works better than any strategy I've ever tried. You really do need to read the book but you really don't have to try to fully implement your first year. You can tailor it to meet your style but I recommend you really do try to follow the steps outlined each time you implement a new component. This is a management system that truly works and the kids love it! This is the first time I was actually able to meet with small groups for 20-30 minutes with almost no interruptions. Note that it took at least a month to get there but once you have your students used to the routine it is kind of magical.
